An insider of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) of former president George Weah has revealed that the presidential campaign of the former ruling party was fully financed by the world steel giant, Arcelor Mittal.
A friend of former president George Weah who said he was constantly having breakfast with the former president when he was still in power, has revealed in a document he gave to the court in Liberia, that AML gave financial support to the campaign team of President Weah during the 2023 presidential election.
“Samuel N. Tweah, illegally withdrew the total amount of Fifteen Million United States Dollars (US$15,000,000.00) out of the funds paid by ArcelorMittal under the Deed of Settlement, and utilized it to provide support to the Congress of Democratic Change (CDC) in the erstwhile General and Presidential Elections and to disburse the balance of the funds to himself, his partners and conspirators in Government in furtherance of this illegal scheme.” Alford B. Morgan, friend of George Weah, said in a petition sent to the court.
Said petition was introduced in court following a double-handed game played between Alford Morgan and the Government of Liberia through Samuel Tweh.
Alford Morgan who was at the end of game victim of the circumstances for not receiving his share of the cake, decided to go to court.
“Samuel Tweah and his collaborators in withdrawing the Fifteen Million United States Dollars (US$15,000,000.00) out of funds paid was not an official Act of the Government in his capacity as Minister of Finance, but rather an abuse of dominant position of Mr. Tweah for personal and or political gain, and at the detriment of the integrity of the people of Liberia, for which he must be held personally responsible. Mr. Samuel Tweah and the Government at all relevant times had a different plan for the money.” Alford Morgan said.
Alford Morgan who was referred to by former president Weah as his brother, has gone as far as suing his brother and his Government for diverting the deal’s money to campaign financing.
Information received by this paper reveal that the finance given by AML during the transaction is still being used farther political activities.
